Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other places outside the uterus, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or the lining of the pelvic cavity. This misplaced tissue can cause a variety of symptoms, including pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and pain during or after sex.

One symptom of endometriosis that some women experience is acne. This is because endometriosis can cause hormonal imbalances, which can lead to increased sebum production and clogged pores. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. When sebum production is increased, it can clog pores and lead to the formation of pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads.

Hormonal fluctuations can influence both acne and, in some cases, the symptoms of endometriosis. While not a direct cause-and-effect, hormonal shifts (like those during menstruation) can exacerbate acne breakouts and can affect the activity of endometrial implants outside the uterus, potentially worsening pain or other symptoms. This shared sensitivity to hormones is a point of connection, even though the conditions themselves are different.

How it works

What to do about it

There are a number of things you can do to manage endometriosis acne. These include:

Using over-the-counter acne treatments. There are a number of over-the-counter acne treatments available, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. These products can help to kill bacteria and unclog pores.
Seeing a dermatologist. If over-the-counter treatments don't work, you may want to see a dermatologist. They can prescribe stronger medications, such as oral antibiotics or retinoids.
Managing your endometriosis.
Treating your endometriosis may also help to improve your acne. This may involve taking hormone therapy or having surgery.

*It is important to note that not all women with endometriosis will experience acne. If you are concerned about your acne, talk to your doctor. They can help you determine the best course of treatment.
